Suvarnabhumi International Airport

Suvarnabhumi International Airport is the major international airport that serves the city of Bangkok in Thailand. This famous airport in Thailand after much planning and delays, was opened on the 15th of September in 2006 for restricted use and was ready for operating commercial flights on the 28th of September. Suvarnabhumi International Airport is the primary hub of Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways International, Orient Thai Airlines, Thai AirAsia and PBair and one of the focus cities of China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air India, EVA Air, Druk Air, Singapore Airlines, Indian Airlines and SriLankan Airlines.

Situated in the commune of Rach Thewa at Bang Phli district of the Samut Prakan Province in the east of Bangkok within 25 km from the heart of the city, the Suvarnabhumi International Airport contains the highest control tower in the world. This airport in Thailand also features the second biggest airport terminal and single building in the world being smaller than the Hong Kong International Airport and bigger than the Incheon International Airport. This airport in Bangkok is also one of the most crowded international airport of Asia and the main airport in Bangkok operating all the commercial flights. It received the airport code of BKK from that of the Don Mueang International Airport. Within months of its inauguration, numerous issues like quality of construction, signage, congestion, conditions of facilities and subsidence of soil started arising and prompted the reopening of the Don Mueang International Airport for permitting renovation works at the airport.

The Suvarnabhumi International Airport has gained popularity as a major economic hub of the country as it is connected with one of the latest motorways to the industrial center of Eastern Seaboard of Thailand. The designer of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport is Murphy/Jahn Architects’ Helmut Jahn, whereas the name of this airport was selected by Bhumibol Adulyadej, the present King of Thailand.
